Douglas Fir (Detail)
The Douglas Fir round comes from Grizedale Forest in the Lake District, and was taken from a tree which fell in 2018. It's 95 years old, almost as old as Forestry England which celebrates it's 100 th year in 2019.
This piece of wood was sanded, burned, wire brushed, and then inked.
The wood isn't level enough to be put through the press so this image is hand burnished using a bone folder. Its a slow, careful process as every millimetre of the paper has to be pressed onto the wood.
But so worth it!
Printed by hand onto Fabriano Unica handmade paper 50% cotton content 250gsm.
The prints are part of an open edition, and signed. They are available as seen without a mount.
The print dimensions are: 7.5 cm x 40.5 cm
The paper dimensions are: 19 cm x 56 cm

This Douglas Fir tree began life in 1923 and fell in 2018. It lived its life in Grizedale Forest, Cumbria and the Foresters at Grizedale kindly gave me this round
Apologies for the quick 'snap' of it framed.
It is also available to view and purchase from the Biscuit Factory Newcastle-upon-Tyne and this is a photo of it delivered. It is also in my solo exhibition at Grizedale until 17th February 2019 and is shown in the photo in a smaller frame.
Its a fabulous piece with dramatic growth rings and shapes but wonderful detail too.
